Ophthalmological Complications of Favism.

چکیده
To the Editorial Committee of the BRMSH JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY SIRs,-I read with interest the article of Choremis, Joannides, and Kyriakides on " Severe Ophthalmological Complications following Favism" (Brit. J. Ophthal. (1960) 44, 353). Since the authors state that "such complications were encountered for the first time and no information was found in the literature", I should like to refer your readers to a case published by my co-worker, Dr. G. Pasca, in 1945. The patient, a farmer aged 55, from Sassari, Sardinia, after a meal of broad beans, entered a broad-bean field and suddenly developed general malaise with weakness and dizziness. During the night his temperature rose and he passed blood-stained urine. Jaundice also developed, and marked anaemia (1,750,000 erythrocytes) was found. Three days later he was suddenly smitten with almost complete blindness. Fundus examination showed constricted arteries, slight enlargement of the veins, and a few haemorrhages scattered on the retina. The optic disc and adjacent portion of the retina were highly oedematous. The ocular tension was low: right eye 9 mm. Hg; left eye 8 mm. Hg (Schiotz). Three weeks later complete optic atrophy was evident, and the visual acuity was reduced to perception of light. The explanation given for the ophthalmological complication was similar to that proposed for amaurosis following blood loss, possibly with the co-existence of toxic factors. This case, which is closely similar to the second case of Choremis and others (1960), has perhaps escaped the notice ofmost ophthalmologists in other countries, through having been published so soon after the war. Yours faithfully, G. B. BIETTi. CLINICA OCULISTICA, UNIVERSITA DI ROMA, ITALY. July 16, 1960. REFERENCES

Prevalence of Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency in Patients Suspected of Favism in Qaleh Ganj, Southern Iran: A Restriction for Malaria Elimination
Background and purpose: Despite wide fight against malaria in endemic regions, it is still one of the most serious infectious diseases in some parts of the world. Primakin is effective in treatment and prevention of malaria. However, individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are at risk for hemolysis and its complications when taking primakin. This study was performe...
متن کاملOn the pathogenesis of favism.
In some Mediterranean areas-mainly the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Cyprus, and Israel-where the cultivation and consumption of broad beans (Vicia faba) are extensive, favism is rather common especially in children. It occurs after the inhalation of some, as yet unidentified constituent(s) of the plant and/or more often after eating the beans, especially when they are fresh. The ...
متن کاملEvaluation of liver and kidney function in favism patients
BACKGROUND G6PD deficiency is the most common enzymopathy of red blood cells. The clinical symptoms of favism are jaundice, hematuria and haemolytic anaemia that seem to affect liver and kidney in long term. Thus we evaluate kidney and liver function of favism patients in an endemic area of the disease with a high rate of fava beans cultivation. METHODS This study was performed on favism pati...
متن کاملFavism: looking for an autosomal gene associated with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
Favism is a severe, acute haemolytic anaemia which occurs in about 20% of G6PD deficient subjects after ingestion of fava beans. Since not all G6PD deficient subjects are sensitive to fava beans, the possibility has been suggested that extra erythrocytic factors may play an important role in the susceptibility to haemolytic favism. To test the hypothesis that an autosomal enzyme is involved in ...
